Antares Launched

Orbital Sciences Corporation's Antares rocket and Cygnus cargo craft launched from Wallops Flight Facility on the Orbital-2 mission -- the company's second operational resupply mission to the International Space Station, under its Commercial Resupply Services contract with NASA.

The storm system that moved through the northeastern U.S. dropped large snowfall totals up to a foot in southern New England to a couple of inches in Virginia.

A few hours after it was grappled by the crew onboard the International Space Station with the Canadarm2 robotic arm, Orbital Sciences' Cygnus cargo craft was installed on the Earth-facing port of the Harmony module, where it will remain for more than a month while the crew transfers the 1.5 tons of provisions and experiments delivered to the station by Cygnus.

NASA commercial space partner Orbital Sciences Corporation launched its Cygnus cargo spacecraft aboard its Antares rocket at 10:58 a.m. EDT Wednesday from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at NASA's Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA's Aqua satellite acquired this image of Tropical Storm Flossie at 1:10 p.m. local time (23:10 Universal Time) on July 28, 2013. The storm was moving westward across the Pacific Ocean, headed for the Hawaiian Islands. It is expected to be the first tropical storm to make landfall on the islands in nearly 20 years.

NASA satellites analyzed Tropical Storm Dorian in infrared light, giving scientists an idea of the storm's structure, cloud heights and cloud temperatures.

Tropical Storm Flossie formed in the Eastern Pacific Ocean and strengthened quickly on July 25. NASA's Aqua satellite passed over Flossie and captured an infrared look at the storm and saw a large area of powerful thunderstorms around its center and south of the center.

Infrared imagery from NASA's Aqua satellite on June 11 showed that Tropical Depression Yagi's strongest quadrant was east of its center. However, since them the storm has weakened after running into an upper-level low pressure area and cooler waters.

NASA's Aqua satellite passed over low pressure System 91L in the Gulf of Mexico and captured infrared imagery that revealed a lot of uplift and strong thunderstorms in the eastern part of the storm despite a poorly organized circulation. NOAA's GOES-East satellite showed the large extent of the low pressure area stretching from Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula to Florida.

Kamchatka Surrounded by Blooms

The Kamchatka Peninsula of far eastern Russian was surrounded by life in late May 2013 -- at least the oceanic sort. Massive blooms of microscopic, plant-like organisms called phytoplankton spread green over the nearby waters. Phytoplankton typically support an abundance of other fish and marine life.

Atlantic Nor'easter Seen by Aqua

NASA's Aqua satellite captured an infrared image of the developing low pressure system off the Mid-Atlantic coast that is forecast to become a Nor'easter and bring winds, heavy surf, rain and snow to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast today, Nov. 7 and tomorrow, Nov. 8.
