Expedition 39 Commander Koichi Wakata of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, NASA Flight Engineer Rick Mastracchio and Soyuz Commander Mikhail Tyurin of the Russian Federal Space Agency (Roscosmos) were greeted in a traditional ceremony at the airport in Karaganda, Kazakhstan, on May 14, a few hours after landing in their Soyuz TMA-11M spacecraft in Kazakhstan near the town of Dzhezkazgan.

Today: 37 Soyuz (37S) Undock and Landing: Expedition 39 Commander (CDR) Wakata, Flight Engineer (FE)-4 Tyurin and FE-5 Mastracchio closed the hatches to the 37S vehicle and undocked their spacecraft from the ISS today at 5:36 p.m. CDT, marking the start of Expedition 40.

Expedition 39 Crew Returns to Earth

Three crew members from the International Space Station (ISS) returned to Earth Tuesday after 188 days in space, during which they orbited Earth more than 3,000 times and traveled almost 79.8 million miles.

Change of Command Ceremony: The Change of Command Ceremony was completed at the end of the crew day today in preparation for return of the 37S crew tomorrow. ISS CDR Wakata, handed over to Expedition 40 CDR Swanson. Undock tomorrow is scheduled at 5:36pm CDT with landing at 8:58pm CDT.

Today: Direct Current Switching Unit (DCSU) 3A: The power system remains in a stable configuration following yesterday's DCSU Channel 3A Remote Bus Isolator (RBI) 1 trip. DCSUs 3A and 3B were tied together and all power loads were recovered. Ground teams continue their investigation and are developing recovery plans.

Today: Cell Mechanosensing (CMS)-1 Fixation: Commander (CDR) Wakata removed four Experiment Measurement Units from the Cell Biology Experiment Facility (CBEF) Incubator Unit (IU) 1G and four units from the microgravity CBEF IU.

Today: 53 Progress (53P) Re-dock: On Wednesday, 53P undocked from the Russian Segment Service Module (SM), remained in orbit, then performed a test to re-rendezvous and dock with ISS today which was performed nominally at 7:15am CDT.

Today: Extravehicular Activity (EVA) #26: Today, Mastracchio (EV1) and Swanson (EV2) successfully performed an EVA to remove and replace External (EXT)-2 Multiplexer/Demultiplexer (MDM).

Outside the International Space Station, Expedition 39 Flight Engineers Rick Mastracchio and Steve Swanson of NASA conducted a spacewalk April 23 to replace a backup computer relay box on the station's S0 (s-zero) truss.

Today: Extravehicular Activity (EVA) #26 Preparation: In preparation for tomorrow's planned EVA to Remove and Replace (R&R) the failed External (EXT) Multiplexer/Demultiplexer (MDM)2, the crew performed the following tasks:
