ALMA Measures Size of Seeds of Planets

Researchers using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have, for the first time, achieved a precise size measurement of small dust particles around a young star through radio-wave polarization.

Astronomers from MAD at Universidad de Chile present a viable scenario for the three dimensional geometry of a planet forming system. The finding is based on the discovery of shadows cast by a warped inner disk which bears strong implications for the dynamics of planet formation.

A team of Japanese astronomers has obtained a firm evidence of formation of a giant planetary system around a young star by the observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA).
